Would you date someone who didn’t love pets as much as you do? For some, the
answer is easy: No way. Read on for a deeper look into how we let our four-legged
friends drive our dating life—and why that’s a doggone good thing.
By Judy Mandell
Take a walk in any city park and you’ll see plenty of singles with their loved ones on a short
leash — literally. For those who think of their dogs and cats as their furry kids, it makes
sense to date only fellow pet lovers, or those who are at least willing to come second, right
behind Fido or Fluffy.
“Here’s this creature who is so happy to see you each night when you come home from work,” says
Charlotte Reed, author of Miss Fido Manners: Complete Book of Dog Etiquette. “He loves you even when you overspend on your credit card bill. He or she always seems to understand when the world is mad at you and your mother just can’t get it. He doesn’t criticize you and certainly doesn’t tell you you’re fat. When you speak, he knows exactly what you’re talking about. When you’re sad, he licks your tears away. You cry when hegets sick. Why? Because, in your mind, no one loves you like your dog. Having a dog is like lotto — you have to be in to win. Outsiders don’t get it. So you MUST date and fall in love with someone who loves dogs as you do.”
Daters who insist on fellow pet lovers have the right idea, according to Craig Malkin, Ph.D., a psychologist in Cambridge, MA. Years of research in attraction and mate selection have confirmed that attraction is strongly influenced by similarity in attitudes and preferences. “You should be sure the person you’re dating is as into animals as you are,” says Malkin.
Online dating allows people to be pet-specific by weeding out potential guys or gals who do or don’t like animals. Kirk Sullivan from Santa Ana, CA, met his wife, Marianne, online. Marianne’s profile photo was of her and her dog. “It was an adorable picture,” says Sullivan. “I knew right away that they were a package deal. If a man was going to date her, then he’d better love that dog, too.”
What date location has the highest potential for a dating disaster?
The beach
Outdoor BBQ
Picnic in the park
Rooftop bar
I am a Woman seeking Men between 25 and 45 Located in (city/zip)
“These differences can lead to huge rifts in the relationship sooner or later.”
Sullivan had two dogs of his own and needed to find someone who’d love his pups as much as he did.
“Four years later, we married and happily merged our doggy family as sort of a furry Brady Bunch,”
he says.
“Smart daters make it clear up front to new potential mates the role their pet plays in their life,” says Mary Jo Fay, author of The Seven Secrets of Love. “For mates who disagree on pet rearing, similar to child rearing, this can be a huge gulf and is best figured out early in the relationship. “Don’t ever buy into someone for his or her ‘potential.’ Accept or
reject someone for who he or she is right now, because almost no one changes for someone else, and these differences can lead to huge rifts in the relationship sooner or later.”
Mary Remer, founder of What a Good Dog! Inc., a dog-training business, agrees that people need to be up front in the very beginning; otherwise, there is the potential for problems down the road. “Knowledge gives people the opportunity to make choices,” says Remer. Lay it out there: ‘I have a dog and he’s a part of my family, and this is really important to me.’ Or: ‘We have a lot of things in common that are great, but I can’t go on with the pet piece.’ People have to be honest and express themselves clearly. The last thing you want to have in a relationship is a human feeling jealous about a dog.”
OK, so you rule out potential partners if they don’t like your pets. But what if your intended is fine with Fido in general but can’t bear to snooze with you and the snoring schnauzer? Would you stand firm, or could you agree to a dog-free bedroom every now and then?
Malkin has seen pet lovers who’ve ruled out partners who didn’t want their pets in bed with them every night. “Pets, just like any member of the family, can crimp an active sex life if you refuse to set limits or lock your bedroom door once in a while,” he says. “As to matters of romance, balance is everything. Owner-pet relationships can interfere with new opportunities, potential romance and ncreased closeness. People can turn healthy relationships with their pets into a barrier to closeness or a substitute for it.”
Sullivan admits that he would have ruled out anyone who didn’t want the dogs in bed… or wanted to
lock them out of the bedroom. However, he does lock the door once in a while because “there are
some moments where you don’t want a couple of cold wet noses poking you, or three puppies
wrestling in bed. This is setting limits on romantic encounters, not on sleeping together at night.
Once it’s time to go to sleep, I’d never lock the door — and neither would Marianne.”
Susan Hartzler from Los Angeles is so nuts about her dogs that she will only consider dating
someone who understands that they sleep with her. She wouldn’t consider any other option. “In
fact, I’m currently writing a memoir that looks at the fact that I am a good judge of character when
it comes to dogs but not so good when it comes to men,” she says.
Some singles use their pets on the Internet as date bait. But Ana Sanchez from Baltimore contends
that a dog is not just bait. “It expresses an important priority in a person’s life that he or she desires
to share with another special person,” she says. Sanchez met her boyfriend online — they just
celebrated six years together.
According to Jeff Marginean, author of My Buddy Butch: Confessions of a New Dog Dad, the way in
which someone takes care of and treats a dog shows whether the person is capable of being a
responsible individual in a relationship and can love and care for another living creature. “Sometimes
it takes many dates to even begin to see this ‘nurturing’ capability of an individual,” says Marginean.
“Knowing that someone can care for dogs and really love them speaks volumes about how they will
treat you. There are many benefits to getting together when both individuals have pets. They share a
similar spirit. They can also teach their kids to love animals in the future.”

Bliss suggests you take your human and visit the New Carivintas Winery in Solvang. It’s Dog Friendly!!!!!

Friday, September 11th, 2009

An important announcement to all my canine friends reading this — get your human and go to the new Carivintas Winery Tasting Room in Solvang, California. Dogs are welcome there and you and your human will have a blast! While your human is enjoying the wine, you can sample the treats and entertain the kids in the play area.Don’t worry about the older kids, they’ll be busy on the networked laptop. Your human will be happy knowing these great wines have aromas of philanthropy, charity, and artistic flair with a fantastic finish: paying it forward because a minimum of 10% of profits are donated to various animal rescue groups including Best Friends Animal Society and many local Humane Societies as well as SPCA’s around the country. When I asked about the name, here’s what they told me:

Mussel Dog works for me!

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

Mussel Dog, a Natural Canine Remedy! The bottle says Mussel Dog improves joint health, erases daily stiffness, reduces allergies, beautifies coat and I can personally give my endorsement to this product. At 10, and after two ACL surgeries, I have been suffering from arthritis. Maybe the surgeries were due to all my agility practice. After all, I was ranked as the #1 Puli in agility in 2001. When I see a course, I think I can do it again but my knees are just too sore. I have always loved to go on walks and hikes, but suddenly I could barely make it out of the house. Then my Mommy started giving me Mussel Dog. Within a week, I got that bounce back in my step. Today, I can enjoy an active life again, going on long walks, hikes and even playing at dog beach. Mussel Dog is the crowing achievement of millions of dollars of research on the effectiveness of a propriety fatty acid combination that is unique to all other formulations. They say this product has shown to benefit a dog’s life in many different ways including decreased aggression, reduced allergies and improved breathing, along with all the amazing benefits I have witnessed for myself. Some Words On Dogs Barking From a Zen Master

The sound of one dog barking

Human beings understand too much. But what they understand is just somebody’s opinion. Like a dog barking. American dogs say, “Woof, woof.” Korean dogs say, “Mung, mung.” Polish dogs say, “How, how.” So which dog barking is correct? This is human beings’ barking, not dog barking. If dog and you become one hundred percent one, then you know sound of barking. This is Zen teaching. Boom! Become one.

Therapy Dogs Visit

Children at County USC Medical Center

Tuesday, September 1

WHAT: A specially trained LA canine unit will bring unconditional love and put smiles on the faces of hospitalized children at the new Los Angeles LAC+USC Medical Center. Baldwin, Bliss, Shiloh and Bear have been members of Therapy Dogs International since they were puppies, visiting children at County General hospital for every holiday. Thanks to the efforts of Marilyn Bennett who started the program 16 years ago with her dog Brando, even children who are terminally ill in the Oncology Ward benefit from a simple snuggle with a dog.

WHEN: Tuesday, September 11:00 am

WHERE: LAC+USC Medical Center, Women’s and Children’s Hospital, 1200 North State Street, Los Angeles

BACKGROUND: Families of patients have praised the monthly program as these specially trained dogs visit patients for a pat on the head, a kiss or a treat. Organizer Bennett, a local realtor with Rodeo Realty of Encino started the partnership with County USC and has personally trained four generations of dogs bringing love to patients on a regular basis. Bennett’s current pack, Shiloh and Bear, are both compete in agility and regularly rank high in the country. Bennett offers her time and money to the program, making sure these underprivileged kids celebrate every holiday. Susan Hartzler, owner of Alpha Dog Public Relations, joined Bennett 9 years ago with Baldwin, a rescued Puli. Baldwin was the #1 Puli in the Nation in Agility in 2001. After two expensive ACL surgeries, he is retired today. Therapy Dogs International, Inc. (TDI) is a volunteer organization dedicated to regulating, testing and registration of therapy dogs and their volunteer handlers for the purpose of visiting nursing homes, hospitals, other institutions and wherever else therapy dogs are needed.

Why no dog swim day in LA?

Dog Days of Summer End with a Splash | August 28, 2009

Local public swimming pools all the across the country are starting to close for the season. And nobody is happier about this than your dog. That’s because Dog Swim Day just may be coming to a swimming pool near you. It’s the one or two days each year that dogs are allowed, even encouraged, to swim, splash and compete for prizes in silly pet events.

You’ll usually find more than just swimming at these highly anticipated events. Maybe you’ll bring along your dog to try his paw at the “Fastest Retrieve” or the “Best Looking Dog When Wet” contests. Or maybe your dog would rather pose for photos with the Local K9 unit, or swing by the micro-chipping clinic. There something for everyone at Dog Swim Day, even for people. Many events welcome rescue organizations with available dogs for adoption, pet product vendors and dog safety demonstrations, all to support local animal welfare charities. What a excellent way to end the swim season.

The Woof Reporters extend our thanks to the many Facebook fans who listed details about Dog Swim Days in their communities. We added these events to our list of scheduled Dog Swim Days below. If you don’t see an event near you, just google “Dog Swim Day” or “Dog Pool” with your city name or ask about it at your local public pool or check doggie event listings.

We Like Cats!

Are you a Dog or Cat Person? Vote Now @ www.meetthebreeds.com

New York, NYFor eons, people have argued over which is better – Men or Women, Republicans or Democrats, Batman or Spiderman and Vanilla or Chocolate. But for pet owners the most heated debate of all is– Dogs or Cats.  Having been our faithful companions for centuries, dogs and cats are the most popular domesticated pets in the world, bringing joy and comfort to millions of people.  But, as beloved as our pets are, there can only be one true ruler of the ‘Companion Animal’ kingdom!  It all comes down to whether your ‘best friend’ is the “cat’s meow” or “top dog.”

Inspired by the upcoming Meet the Breeds™ event, the world’s largest showcase of cats and dogs, the American Kennel Club® (AKC) and the Cat Fanciers’ Association® (CFA) have joined forces to put an end to this long-running dispute once and for all with a definitive one-question survey: “Are you a dog or cat person?”  You can weigh in and cast your vote now at www.meetthebreeds.com.

The arguments are convincing on both sides. Dog lovers boast that canines are social animals and don’t need a litter box, will guard and protect you, can be taught tricks and can always be counted on to adore you. Cat lovers brag that felines are affectionate, regal, slobber-free, self-cleaning, lap-sitting, purr-in-your-ear companions who won’t disturb the neighbors while you’re at work.

In fact, one meetthebreeds.com cat voter said, “If people were more cat-like we’d be able to separate pretenders from the real thing, take better care of ourselves, do what pleases us instead of what pleases everybody else, and enjoy life more.”  A dog voter, on the other hand, argued that “Dogs will offer themselves up to save their military and police handlers and will face any challenge to try and help a human in need. They have stood alone at night guarding the herdsmen flock and stood by the side of a fallen loved one offering comfort.”

While this is a debate almost everyone can weigh in on, could the feline vs. canine conundrum be behind some of Hollywood’s biggest conflicts?   According to Denise Richards, her eldest daughter Sam was named after ex-husband Charlie Sheen’s cat. Denise explained that Charlie loved the cat so much he insisted on his daughter having the same name. Since the divorce, Denise, who currently has 10 dogs, has been quoted as saying “we don’t have the cat anymore.”  Visit our Web site to learn more about celebrities and their relationships with their pets.

As for you, we need your vote by October 6, 2009. Visit www.meetthebreeds.com and after you place your vote, check back at any time to see what pet is ahead or write to us at meetthebreeds@akc.org to tell why you voted the way you did. Also download free virtual “Dogs are #1” and “Cats are #1” stickers for your Web site, blog or social media pages.

Sponsored by PetPartners, Inc. a leading pet healthcare provider, Meet the Breeds will be held October 17 & 18, 2009 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City.  From the Afghan Hound to the Turkish Angora, the event will showcase 160 AKC registered dog breeds and 41 CFA registered cat breeds in booths individually decorated to depict each breed’s country of origin, historical purpose/function, and attributes as a family pet.  The family-friendly event is an opportunity for potential pet owners to interact with responsible breeders and play with dogs and cats while educating themselves about responsible pet ownership and choosing the right pet for their lifestyle.

Event hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both Saturday, October 17, and Sunday, October 18. Tickets allow admittance for one day and can be purchased at www.meetthebreeds.com.

###

About Meet the Breeds — With 160 dog breeds and 41 cat breeds, plus demonstrations, shopping and children’s activities, no pet lover will want to miss Meet the Breeds. The event is proudly presented by PetPartners, Inc. a leading pet healthcare provider, and will feature over 115,000 square feet of dog and cat festivities. Baldwin & Bliss ran across this Study_ PR People Surprisingly Ethical!

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

89051042_bb9717c2f1.jpg

In a blow to flackery and stereotyping, a study funded by Penn State’s Arthur W. Page Center for Integrity in Public Communication discovered that PR people are near the top in ethical thinking compared to other professionals.

The Center’s Johnson Legacy Scholars Renita Coleman and Lee Wilkins used the O’Dwyer’s database of firms as a sample and something called the Defining Issues Test (DIT) to empirically measure the moral development of working PR pros.

Coleman and Wilkins are J-school professors at U.T. Austin, and University of Missouri-Columbia respectively.

The DIT posed six ethical dilemmas and looked at reasoning in five areas: business concerns, internal motives, truth and respect, religious influences and external influences.

While seminarians and philosophers kicked all-comer ass, PR ranked alongside journalists, nurses and dental students, and beat out orthopedic surgeons, business professionals, accounting students and veterinary students.

Devil took the hindmost with junior high school students scoring even lower than prison inmates, in case you’re curious. Funny but not surprising since age and education are key factors in ethical development.

The researchers explain the built-in aspects of the work that account for PR’s surprising ethics:

“To accomplish this function (PR), they need to maintain the trust of both parties, but particularly the trust of journalists who are already skeptical of their institutional role and their individual motives.

Consequently, honesty and a lack of willingness to deceive those who receive information are critical in effective public relations practice.”

The full paper is published in the July 2009 issue of the Journal of Public Relations Research.

Dogs As Smart as 2-Year-Old Kids

ip over this cWhich dogs are the smartest? Border collies, poodles, German shepherds, in that order, says Stanley Coren, a canine expert and professor emeritus at the University of British Columbia. Those breeds have been created recently compared with other dog breeds and may be smarter in part because we’ve trained and bred them to be so, Coren said. The dogs at the top of the pack are on par with a 2.5-year-old.

Better at math and socializing

While dogs ranked with the 2-year-olds in language, they would trump a 3- or 4-year-old in basic arithmetic, Coren found. In terms of social smarts, our drooling furballs fare even better.”The social life of dogs is much more complex, much more like human teenagers at that stage, interested in who is moving up in the pack and who is sleeping with who and that sort of thing,” Coren told LiveScience.

Coren, who has written more than a half-dozen books on dogs and dog behavior, will present an overview of various studies on dog smarts at the American Psychological Association’s annual meeting in Toronto.

“We all want insight into how our furry companions think, and we want to understand the silly, quirky and apparently irrational behaviors [that] Lassie or Rover demonstrate,” Coren said. “Their stunning flashes of brilliance and creativity are reminders that they may not be Einsteins but are sure closer to humans than we thought.”

Dogs Save Lifes…read this…

A German lady, Irena Sendler, died a year ago at age 98.

During WWII, she got permission to work in the  Warsaw Ghetto

as a Plumbing/Sewer specialist.

She had an ”ulterior motive” as she knew what the

Nazis’ plans were for the Jews.

She smuggled infants out in the bottom of her tool box and

she carried out larger children in a burlap sack in the back of her truck.

She also had a dog she trained to bark when the

Nazi soldiers let her in and out of the ghetto.

The soldiers wanted nothing to do with the dog, and the

barking covered any noise of the children.

She managed to smuggle out and save 2500 little ones.

She was caught,  and the Nazis broke her

legs and arms and beat her severely.

She kept a record of the names of all the smuggled kids in a glass jar buried under a tree in her back yard.  After the war, she tried to locate any parents who had survived and reunited them with their children.

She then helped to place orphaned children into foster and adoptive homes.

In 2009, Irena Sendler was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize  . . .

She was not selected.

Al Gore won, for a slide show on Global Warming.

Brother can you spare some kibble? Free pet food programs

When times are tough for people, times are just as tough for their pets.

In fact, sometimes personal budget issues get so bad that people and their pets are required to part ways. If a family is struggling just to put food on it’s own table, that sometimes means Fido and his food dish have to go.

The struggle to keep beloved pets properly fed and at home, is the driving force behind a new wave of free pet food programs which is beginning to take hold across the country.

In some instances, the free pet food programs are initiated by local animal control and animal shelter agencies. Such is the case with a well received pet food program thriving in Floyd County, Ga.

Floyd County Animal Control was witnessing a startling increase in the number of surrendered animals due to economic conditions. It was decided that a free pet food assistance program might help many people keep their pets fed and at home.

With generous assistance from a Georgia based food company, Floyd County Animal Control now makes free pet food available to people who can verify their income difficulties in any of a number of simple ways.

In Muskegon, Mich., a free pet food program was born through the efforts of a couple of full-time students who were having trouble affording the expense of feeding their two dogs. In addition to making free pet food available to owners of dogs and cats, Pet Pantry of Michigan accepts donations of food for other small mammals, aquatic pets, and reptiles.

Through it’s network of donation centers and drop-off sites, Pet Pantry of Michigan also accepts donations of a full range of animal care products and also makes those items available to financially struggling pet owners. All a pet owner needs to do in order to take advantage of this free pet food program, is to show simple documentation which verifies their financial hardship.

The Food Bank for New York City, which has provided hunger relief to thousands of people, has also recently begun to provide free pet food to pet owners in dire straits. Staff there has recognized the importance of keeping families together with their pets.

The organization has indicated that the success of the program will be dependent upon a blend of donations and demand. At this point, Food Bank for New York City indicates that there is plenty of demand for the service.

It has been recommended that pet owners who are having trouble bearing the cost of feeding their pets should fully explore their options before parting with a beloved animal friend. Free pet food programs sometimes remain hidden in the shadows until you carefully look for them.

Local veterinarians and animal shelters should be contacted first about possible free pet food programs. Pet owners could also consider contacting local pet food retailers, animal control agencies, feed dealers, churches and even the local area chamber of commerce.

If all else fails, and a pet owner finds it necessary to surrender a household pet, it absolutely must be done in a controlled and responsible way. Please contact your local animal shelter or humane society for guidance in surrendering any domestic animal.

Growing Up Dog Weird
By
Susan Hartzler

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been an excellent judge of character: canine character. Looking back, that makes sense because my childhood dog, Siesta was the one who taught me about love and forgiveness. Because of my bond with that dog so early in life, I have always felt more comfortable with a canine by my side. I realize now that my family was embarrassed about my intense attachment to dogs. But right or wrong, I was (and still am) dog weird.

It’s not so strange when you consider I’m in excellent company. Take, for instance, Goddess Diana from Roman Mythology who shares my love and reverence for the canine spirit. She’s also found in Greek mythology as Artemis, the Goddess of the Moon, the heavenly light that illuminates the darkness, ruling the wilderness, the untamed frontiers of nature.

Diana was powerful and complex, celebrated as the goddess of childbirth, women, song, dance and animals. It’s interesting that the lunar Goddess loved dogs known to howl at the moon. In fact, dogs are one of Diana’s most sacred animals.

The Goddess of the Hunt is portrayed in images and statues with her long blonde hair wearing flowing dresses on her tall and slender body carrying a bow and arrow accompanied by her faithful dogs and a strong, young stag.

When I picture Diana, I am immediately transported back in time to my own backyard in the suburbs of Los Angeles where I played deer family with my childhood dog Siesta. She weighed only ten-pounds but she was my baby fawn and I was her mother doe, my backyard transformed into an enchanted forest of lush alpine meadows where we roamed freely in the fierce mists.

One cold December morning when I was about six, I snuck into my mom’s forbidden private drawer on a Christmas mission. I had been warned not to touch her things and never go near that dresser. But I had seen the bewitching bottles and jars of sweet smelling potions and lotions. That day, I just couldn’t help myself. So, I carefully pulled the drawer open when I was certain mom was in the kitchen and searched through her make-up. I knew exactly what I was looking for, passing the bottles of Clinique moisturizer that I wanted so badly to open. I had to hurry. At the very back of the drawer, I found it, the bright red lipstick in its sleek silver case. Grabbing it, I ran outside as fast as I could, bringing my little dog with me to our personal Eden, the best room in the house, our backyard – there anything was possible.

This vast half-acre, more a park than a yard, provided refuge to make up my own adventures where all I needed was my imagination and my dog. Surrounded by ivy draping down the fenced in space created my wonderland with a mature walnut tree perfect for climbing, a young lemon tree bearing the juiciest and most tart lemons I had ever tasted, and two giant Cyprus trees where squirrels loved to play hide-and-go seek, driving Siesta wild. That day in December, Siesta and I were heroes, with no one to bother us except Mother Nature.

Our initial step on our way to becoming Santa’s legends was for me to paint our noses red. Siesta first. I carefully took the red lipstick in my hand, grabbed her by the snout and smeared it onto her entire black nose. It was not easy. Lipstick is not meant to cover a wet doggie’s nose. On top of that, a squirrel bolted across our yard when I was only half way through. Siesta exploded out of my arms to give chase, breaking off the tip.

I picked up the broken piece, now covered in grass, and jammed it back in the tube. I applied red to my nose (with some hints of grass attached). Once in character, Siesta and I trotted around the yard. Right there under sunny skies, we had both magically transformed into two little Rudolph’s, the famous reindeer from Santa’s sleigh.

Siesta gave me her entire attention as I sang my favorite Christmas carol, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. She trotted by my side, her face looked up at me lovingly as we ran along the perimeter of the yard. Nothing else in the world mattered except the two of us. I imagined we were in Santa’s stable at the North Pole, outside the magical toy shop where little green elves were getting ready for the big night when dreams would come true for all the good little boys and girls around the world.

The sleigh was loaded and Santa got on board. We were about to take off, rounding the corners of the yard, running faster and faster. I was in the lead with Siesta keeping up directly at my feet, her little legs spreading out as far as they could go. Our red noses were brighter than the sun. My strides started to lengthen; I was leaping high in the air, the wind against my face. I heard Santa:

“What have you got on your face? Is that lipstick? Is that my lipstick on the dog?”

I tried to head Siesta off galloping in the opposite direction.

“Susan Frances, I’m speaking to you.” Oh no, she’s using my middle name, I thought.

“Mom, we’re about to take off. Santa needs us to guide his sleigh or else all the good children won’t get their presents.”

“If you don’t come here right now, Santa’s not going to bring you any presents, young lady. In fact, I have a mind to send you away to the North Pole. All by yourself.” She grabbed my hand and dragged me into the house.

Red nose or not, I used my imagination to play deer family all the time with Siesta, envisioning her as a gold fawn with white spots, her big pointy ears resembling a miniature deer in the wild. Other people remarked that she looked like a giant rat. She was supposed to be a full bred Chihuahua when we bought her at a local pet shop but my parents speculated later that she was most likely a terrier mix. Whatever she was, that small grey dog with dark brown soulful eyes looked like she stepped in white paint then used the tips of her feet to brush streaks on her tail and chest.

Siesta got her name because that was the only Spanish word my father knew. The instant she joined our family, I never wanted to go anywhere without her. When I wasn’t with her, I missed her fur’s nutty aroma and her tiny feet that smelled like corn chips. She was supposed to be the family pet but everyone knew Siesta was my dog. She slept with me. She followed me everywhere. I carried her around in my backpack. She drank from my Betsy Wetsy doll’s baby bottle and ate doughnuts and bologna while sitting in a high chair.

That gray wire-haired, goofy-looking dog meant everything to me. I felt lost without her. I pushed her in a toy baby carriage, secretly fed her scraps from the dinner table and cuddled with her all night. I even knit her a hat and scarf for the winter, complete with holes for her pointy ears to wear when it was chilly outside.

Leaving her all day long while I was at school seemed like cruel punishment to me, although I liked my 1st grade teacher Mrs. Berger. She was a nice looking woman with dark, short stylish hair, bangs framing her brown caring eyes. She wore matching sweater sets and skirts with flesh toned stocking that made a swishing sound as she passed by. I don’t ever remember hearing her raise her voice but she always managed to keep the class in line.

She smelled like my all time favorite Lilly of the Valley, those little white flowers that reminded me of bells. Mrs. Berger was very ladylike yet intelligent; explaining to us everything in the entire world there was to know. One day, we were asked to draw a picture of what we would like to be when we grew up.

There were pictures of astronauts and actresses, pilots and zoo keepers. As each student brought his special work of art to the front of the room, Mrs. Berger smiled with delight.

Then it was my turn. I had on my ginger colored peasant dress with my favorite desert boots. My mom begged me not to wear those shoes with dresses but I loved them. They were my absolute favorite; dark brown rubber soled suede booties that came to my ankles accented with white socks.

I stood up confidently with my picture, walked to the front of the room, turned it around and held it high above my head. I smiled as I looked around the room: my picture was the best of all and I knew it. Mrs. Berger looked at me in her lemon sweater set, her hands resting in her lap, her smile frozen like the mannequins I saw when I had to endure shopping excursions with my mom. I had drawn a deer like the one I pretended to be with Siesta in my backyard.

I scanned the classroom; my friends were laughing and pointing at me, my face flushed red in embarrassment. Quickly, I brought the picture down. Could I have been mistaken? My face turned sour, my eyes angry looking at the kids I thought were my friends. My stomach ached making flip flops as I stood there not knowing what to do next.

Mrs. Berger didn’t quite know what to either or what to say about my drawing of Rudolph, the famous reindeer from Santa’s sleigh, red nose and all.

“I see you chose Rudolph because he saved Christmas with his red nose,” she said, trying her best to give me a graceful way out.

“No, I choose Rudolph because I like him,” I shouted at her. I knew not to admit that I liked to pretend my little dog was my baby fawn.

“Okay Susie, let’s let someone else have a turn.” She motioned for me to sit down. I stomped back to my seat, defeated but determined that when I grew up I would show them all. I would become a reindeer one day.

Later that year for our Christmas pageant, I sang Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer while my dad took time off from work to accompany me on the piano. The entire school came to the auditorium to listen during the annual holiday assembly. I was more excited that my dad was there than nervous about performing in front of about 500 kids. Besides, I had a naturally beautiful singing voice.

As I belted out the words, I looked down; my brown desert boots turned into little reindeer hoofs and the stark white tiles of the floors transformed into snow banks. I closed my eyes and felt myself flying at remarkable speeds, the cold air and snow bothering me not one bit. I felt the pull of the sleigh as we landed on roof tops, Santa sliding down chimneys, leaving presents for all the world’s good little boys and girls. When I finished and the applause began, I opened my eyes. I took a bow and smiled. I had done the impossible. For just one moment, I had become Rudolph.

Spa Luce Offers Calm In The Midst Of Chaos

by Deidre Woollard Jul 4th 2009 at 11:01AM

The Hollywood and Highland Center in Los Angeles doesn’t exactly inspire thoughts of blissed-out spa moments but ascend from the parking lot and up to Level 5 of the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel and the world falls away a bit. Spa Luce is a beautiful and tranquil place to grab a little peace in the middle of a bustling area. The decor is modern and spare and the treatments are designed to be holistic and recharge body and mind.

Spa Luce features skincare and body care products and treatments by Red Flower, Sonya Dakar and Somme Institute as well as a signature scent created for Spa Luce by Dr. Sharon, an aromatherapist, acupuncturist, chiropractor and masseuse. One of the most extensive experiences offered by the spa is the hammam ritual. The multi-step massage ritual includes a cleansing with Moroccan mint tea and silt, a vigorous scrub with coffee, olive stones and fresh lemons, and a wrap in rhassoul clay. Finally after all that preparation you surrender to a Turkish massage with essences of cardamom, jasmine, bergamot, amber and clove. The 80-minute experience costs $180.

You can extend your Spa Luce experience by taking ample time to enjoy the facilities. Treatments include access to the eucalyptus-infused steam rooms and rooftop pool. Spa lunches can also be ordered up and eaten in the relaxation area or next to the pool. And you can also buy products to take home. Dr. Sharon’s Am I Dreaming aromatherapy kit, shown above, includes an aromatherapy oil, an aromatherapy candle, the Aromatin fragrance dispenser, and an instruction booklet. It sells for $48.

Spinning the Web: P.R. in Silicon Valley

Photo illustration by The New York Times

Published: July 4, 2009

Menlo Park, Calif. — Brooke Hammerling (publicist) and Erin McKean (entrepreneur) are in a Sand Hill Road conference room, hashing out plans to unveil Ms. McKean’s new Web site, Wordnik.

Peter DaSilva for The New York Times

Donna Sokolsky Burke, co-founder of the firm Spark PR, with Alex Edelstein at a friend’s birthday party in San Francisco. She says “power users” in social media are increasingly important.

Ms. Hammerling, while popping green apple Jolly Ranchers into her mouth, suggests a press tour that includes briefing bloggers at influential geek sites like TechCrunch, All Things Digital and GigaOM.

But Roger McNamee, a prominent tech investor who is backing Wordnik, is also in the room, and a look of exasperation passes across his face at the mere mention of the sites.

“Why shouldn’t we avoid them? They’re cynical,” he says, also noting his concern that Wordnik would probably appeal more to wordsmiths than followers of tech blogs. “That’s where I would be most uncomfortable. They don’t know the difference between ‘they’re’ and ‘there.’ ”

Without missing a beat, Ms. Hammerling changes course, instantly agreeing with Mr. McNamee’s take. “I love you for that,” she intones. “I’ll leave the tech blogs out. Let them come to me.”

Instead, she decides that she will “whisper in the ears” of Silicon Valley’s Who’s Who — the entrepreneurs behind tech’s hottest start-ups, including Jay Adelson, the chief executive of Digg; Biz Stone, co-founder of Twitter; and Jason Calacanis, the founder of Mahalo.

Notably, none are journalists.

This is the new world of promoting start-ups in Silicon Valley, where the lines between journalists and everyone else are blurring and the number of followers a pundit has on Twitter is sometimes viewed as more important than old metrics like the circulation of a newspaper.

Gone are the days when snaring attention for start-ups in the Valley meant mentions in print and on television, or even spotlights on technology Web sites and blogs. Now P.R. gurus court influential voices on the social Web to endorse new companies, Web sites or gadgets — a transformation that analysts and practitioners say is likely to permanently change the role of P.R. in the business world, and particularly in Silicon Valley.

While public relations is just one arrow in the marketing quiver for most companies, it plays an especially crucial role in a region where dozens of start-ups are born each month. Without money for advertising, these unknown companies have to promote themselves to potential users, investors, employees and partners.

“Few tech companies with absolutely no P.R. have built a user base successfully,” said Margit Wennmachers, a co-founder of OutCast Communications, a P.R. agency in San Francisco that opened in 1997. “They need P.R. to put the booster under that rocket ship.”

In the new world of social media, P.R. people must know hundreds of writers, bloggers and Twitter users instead of having six top reporters on speed dial. Ms. Hammerling, the latest example of the omnipresent start-up pitchwoman, is the doyenne of who-you-know P.R.

She arrived in Silicon Valley from the East Coast in 1997, just when the dot-com craze was reaching a crescendo and P.R.’s pivotal role in the start-up world was being cemented. And the evolution of her own tactics has run parallel to the ever-changing marketing forays that make this area a singular hotbed of promotional experimentation.

Dena Cook, Ms. Hammerling’s business partner at Brew Media Relations, recalls the boom years when start-ups sent P.R. firms handsome checks that the firms had to return because they didn’t have room for new clients. For start-ups that did corral a P.R. adviser, it often didn’t matter if they had a solid business; Ms. Cook says a regional newspaper once ran a glowing article about one of her clients the same day the company went out of business.

At the time, tools of the trade were largely limited to press releases and pitch letters, embargoes and exclusives and, of course, the legendary and often criticized parties. Those events included martinis and Champagne, lobster and shrimp, Tori Amos and Aerosmith, all to celebrate companies that had yet to make a cent.

In those days, it took about six months to bring to market a new product or a start-up, Ms. Wennmachers recalls. First came East Coast tours with analysts and monthly publications, followed by visits to weeklies, then dailies.

But the rise of blogs and social networks — and companies’ ability to post information on their own sites — transformed all this. Gradually, deadlines disappeared, as even monthly magazines offered Web sites that published stories by the minute.

Baldwin brings smiles to a child in the hospital

Baldwin brings smiles to a child in the hospital

I’ll never forget the first time I took Baldwin to County General in Downtown Los Angeles. I dressed him in scrubs for his first visit, complete with a purple stethoscope. He didn’t mind dressing up. I think he sensed he was about to embark on an important mission and that the outfit was just part of the deal.

I was a bit nervous because I had to monitor Baldwin and make sure he remained calm in the new environment with all the smells and sounds of a hospital. I wasn’t at all sure what he would do. But I had my treat bag filled and had taught Baldwin lots of tricks to share with the kids.

I don’t know how, but Baldwin knew exactly what to do from the moment he walked into the oncology ward. We were to visit with a little seven-year old girl named Maria who had just finished a round of chemotherapy treatments. She was alone, waiting for us in the play room in a wrinkled hospital gown, looking gaunt and tired, her pale completion making her seem almost transparent. With a frame so skinny from her treatments, her cheek bones stood out and her eyes looked sunken-in surrounded by thick black circles. Even her pink fluffy slippers looked big. I took note of the IV in her arm because I wanted to make sure Baldwin didn’t bump or dislodge it.

I asked her if she wanted Baldwin to come sit next to her. She shook her head yes. He hopped right up on the couch and immediately laid his entire body across her. At first, I was mortified. What if he hurt her? I didn’t expect him to do that but it was too late. He just did it.

Before I could do anything about it, Maria rubbed under his chin. Then he put his head down and sighed before closing his eyes. Curious, I sat down across from them and watched. Maria began breathing deeply with him, getting more color back with every inhalation. It was a miracle.

Maria gently stroked Baldwin’s fur for the next hour. Her tiny hand moved over his back again and again, much like someone’s fingers praying with rosary beads.

“Hail Mary, Full of Grace, The Lord is With Thee,” I kept repeating while I watched. That’s when I realized I was witnessing Grace in motion.

Here was this high energy dog, a Puli that ran agility courses, herded sheep and could perform all sorts of tricks. He made me throw balls and Frisbees for hours on end. Rarely did he snuggle with me. But there he was in the oncology ward doing exactly what had to be done, exactly what this little girl needed at that moment.

From then on, I took my cues from Baldwin, not the other way around when we went to the hospital. I understood that he was tuned into something far greater than I would ever understand. I was just his facilitator at the end of his leash.

New Flu Vaccine Approved — for Dogs

Jacquelyn Martin/Associated Press

NOT-SO-EASY BREATHING Sophie, left, and Pugsly, adopted from Mid-Atlantic Pug Rescue, may be susceptible to the dog flu because of their short, bent respiratory tracts.

Published: June 29, 2009

There is a new flu virus going around. It initially looked quite lethal, and caused panic. Now it is clear that it has killed relatively few victims — and many of those have underlying conditions. It is particularly dangerous to be the possessor of a pushed-in nose — that is, to be a Pekingese, a pug or a Shi-Tzu.

Do you have a question about dog flu? Dr. Cynda Crawford answers readers’ questions about canine influenza and the first vaccine approved for it.

It is the H3N8 dog flu. The virus, scientists believe, jumped from horses to dogs at least five years ago, but it has never infected a human.

Last week, the United States Department of Agriculture announced that it had approved the first vaccine for it.

While fears of a flu pandemic among humans have shifted from the lethal H5N1 avian flu to the relatively mild H1N1 swine flu, the H3N8 canine flu has been a quiet undercurrent in the United States, rarely discussed except among veterinarians and dog owners in the few areas where it has struck hard: Florida, New York City’s northern suburbs, Philadelphia and Denver.

In line with the virologists’ adage that the only predictable thing about flu viruses is that they are unpredictable, the dog flu has baffled those following it.

“I don’t think we know what this virus is going to do yet,” said one of its discoverers, Dr. Cynda Crawford of the University of Florida veterinary school.

When Dr. Crawford began studying it in January 2004, it had come to her notice as a mysterious cough and pneumonia that killed a third of the greyhounds at a Florida dog track. By the next year, she had found it in seven states and had shown that it could be passed by dogs who just rubbed noses on the street or shared a water dish, and that humans could carry it on their clothes. There was a brief flurry of fear that it would kill 1 percent to 10 percent of the country’s 70 million dogs.

It has proved about as deadly as Dr. Crawford predicted. She estimates that by itself, it kills 5 percent of the dogs that catch it. Add the deaths at shelters that eliminate the virus by killing all their dogs and disinfecting their cages, and the total mortality rate is 8 percent.

(By contrast, the mortality rate of the 1918 Spanish flu in humans was about 2 percent.)

But it has not spread nearly as vigorously as she expected. It has now been found in 30 states, but almost exclusively in settings where dogs live closely together: shelters, pet stores, kennels and dog schools. Because the owners of these establishments have learned to turn away sick dogs just as school principals facing swine flu send home sick children, the disease’s progress has been slowed.

“Probably over 10,000 dogs have been infected,” Dr. Crawford said, “but I can’t say whether it’s 20,000 or 30,000. In a population of 70 million, that’s a drop in the bucket.”

Dr. Edward J. Dubovi of the veterinary school at Cornell University, another discoverer of the virus, said it is “probably not as well adapted to dogs as it could be.” It took five mutations to let it jump to dogs from horses, where it had circulated for 40 years.

Another mutation or two “could make it a very serious issue,” he said, but at the moment, “it takes a certain density of dogs to keep it going.”

Some veterinarians have found that the dogs that tend to die from it are the “brachycephalics” — dogs with short snub noses.

Just as obesity has proved dangerous to human flu victims because of the weight on their chests, being bred to have a short, bent respiratory tract is dangerous for dogs.

“It really puts a strain on their ability to breathe,” Dr. Crawford said. “They can’t move air in and out of their lungs.”

Even in recession, furry friends come first

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

Pinched by recession, Christmas shoppers will skimp on people, sure. But never a dog.

“Oh, no. Not for our babies. Are you kidding?” said San Francisco resident Donald Steelman, whose bichon-Yorkie, Milo, has his own closet with 21 coats in it. Milo gets to pick what to wear every afternoon to the Doggie Christmas Tree in Lafayette Park in Pacific Heights, where his laminated picture hangs high on a bough, alongside pictures of all the other regulars, dead or alive.

“As long as they’re being fed and clothed well, everything is OK,” said Steelman, who goes by his own pet name, Bonjo.

In a survey released last week by the American Kennel Club, 81 percent of respondents said they would buy holiday gifts for their dogs, and 69 percent would sooner tighten their belts on friends and extended family than tighten the collars on their dogs. And 65 percent would rather eat ramen noodles than make their dogs eat on the cheap.

The buck stops somewhere beyond the dish.

“We’ll cut back on our own food first,” said Ming Chapin, owner of Kelsi, a white bich-poo (bichon-poodle mix) who was dashing around the Lafayette Park tree while trying out a new pink rain slicker, a hand-me-down from Milo.

“It’s her color,” Chapin said. The raincoat is a necessity, not a gift, she said, and so is the monthly visit to the salon, $50 plus tip. “She’s on all the furniture,” Chapin said, “so she needs to be kept clean.”

Another new study, released by the University of Vienna, concluded that dogs can sense unfair treatment. If slighted, the animal may decline to perform a trick and will go so far as to turn tail and look away. No owner wants to be faced with that on Christmas morning.

Sales are unheard of

This may help explain why nothing is on discount at pet boutiques, seasonal or otherwise – even in a grim economy.

“We don’t ever have a sale. We don’t have to,” said Rachel Kirshman, associate at George, purveyor of fine American-made pet products on California Street. “I’ve had a solid day, and it has been good for the past week.” Most popular this season are a gingerbread stuffed animal with a different squeak in each limb, $22.50, and musical Hanukkah dreidels “for the Jewish dog,” $12.50.

Asked whether a recession will interfere, Kierstan Ranum, owner of an 11-month-old Staffordshire named Molly, said: “Not with this. It never does. I think they appreciate it more than people do.”

Gift wrapping is an important extra. Maybe as important as the gift. Gwen Cage’s coton de tulear, Chepe, empties his stocking of bones, balls and treats first, saving the wrapped gift to tear into. “He always knows when it is new and it’s for him,” said Cage, after doing a lap with Chepe around Alta Plaza Park, also in Pacific Heights.

Along the park terrace, a mother-daughter border terrier duo was playing tug-of-war with a toy in the shape of a doughnut. To prevent this type of arguing on Christmas morning, each gets her own stocking, filled equally. “We couldn’t have any fighting about it,” said owner Tina Evans, who won’t put out the stockings until the dogs are asleep, to protect the surprise. Her dogs know what day is Christmas, she says, and know which stockings are theirs.

“They’re up at 6 to check it out,” Evans said.

Dog shopping is cheap

Pet owners are quick to point out that shopping for dogs is cheap compared with shopping for people, even at 40 percent off.

“When you think about it, you can get a whole stocking filled with toys for $11,” said Annie Altman, owner of Chester, a “labcetera (lab etcetera, etcetera).” “What can you get a kid for $11? Nothing.”

Still, it adds up. Lafayette Park tree trimmer Bob Turner read somewhere that an owner spends $26,000 during an animal’s lifetime. At first reading, Turner thought that was high. Then when he tallied it, it seemed low for San Francisco. The home groomer alone costs $80 or $85, every six weeks for his young Malti-poo (Maltese and poodle) Marley, named for Bob the Rastafarian, not Old Marley the ghost.

“Marley is gonna cost $26,000 easy. When you start looking at doggie jackets, doggie toys. And vet care is not inexpensive,” said Turner, while paying homage to a laminate of Marley’s late predecessor, a yellow lab named Coco.

Bonjo, a hairdresser, saves by slipping Milo into the chair for a touch-up or blowout. The 21 coats in the closet come from a doting godfather in Florida, who is always sending out new fashion possibilities.

There is no annual party at the Lafayette Park Doggie Christmas Tree, but there is an owners’ night out, leaving the dogs at home.

“You get 20 people and 20 dogs in one apartment,” Bonjo laughed.

So what do they talk about?

“Something else besides our dogs, finally,” he said. “We do have other things in our lives, occasionally. I know it’s hard to believe.”

I brought a Search and Rescue Dog, Willow to the mall. Sponsored by my client Chillybuddy, Willow took pictures with shoppers and was a huge hit! Here she is with her owner Bobbie Snyder. The two of them are true American Heroes, showing up whenever there’s a natural disaster like they did for 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina. My Bliss had to show her support by getting a photo with Willow too!

YOYO For Presidential Puppy – For the Change Pets Need

Saturday, December 6th, 2008

Los Angeles, California – In the weeks since President-Elect Barack Obama’s historic victory, the most pressing question on everybody’s mind is the most surprising of all: who’s going to be the presidential puppy? During his eloquent speech on Election Night, in which he declared that “change has come to America,” Obama promised his two young daughters, Malia and Sasha, a puppy when they move into the White House, carrying on a long tradition of famous Presidential Pets. But who is the right pet for America’s New First Family?

Behold, the candidate for today’s America: Yoyo the Puli for Presidential Puppy!

Yoyo is a native of New Orleans, where she survived Hurricane Katrina, and she is a rescue dog, which would show the Obamas’ support of shelters throughout the country. She is hypoallergenic, which is a necessity because of Malia’s allergies. This housetrained, well-groomed four-year-old Puli is energetic, friendly, and very diplomatic, just in case Vladimir Putin brings his Russian wolfhound over for a run!

Yoyo’s Puli Party Platform:

Yoyo calls for Americans to help make the change that’s necessary in our nation’s overcrowded shelters and help her work toward a future where no more pets have to be euthanized. She hopes to put rescue and shelter dogs into all American homes. Her personal motto is “No More Drama,” and she encourages dogs everywhere to unite and put conflict behind them, volunteer in their communities, avoid chewing on furniture, and remember that their similarities (four legs, cute noses, tails) are far greater than their differences.

Other “pet projects” for Yoyo include:

Support American Humane Put your canine in a cool, American Apparel ‘White House PAWtential’ doggie t-shirt with proceeds going to this worthwhile organization. www.alphadogpr.com

· Stay Cool Under Fire – Just like the canine heroes she admires who volunteer for Search & Rescue Missions, Yoyo promises all dogs will be kept cool in the summer and warm in the winter. She suggests owners visit www.Chillybuddy.com and check out the latest vests like the special edition red, white and blue one she’s wearing to announce her candidacy.

· Green Toys for All – Pets of all shades should demand toys and playthings made from non-toxic materials, produced by environmentally responsible companies, such as Simply Fido’s Organic Pet Toy Collection, which manufactures all of its toys right here in the United States. www.simplyfido.com

· Eat Organic – Just like their owners, dogs and cats love their organic food! Organic pet foods, like Kruncheros Fine Pet Dining, are simply healthier and tastier, and the choice of the discerning pet palate. Kruncheros offers a sophisticated line of freeze-dried raw food that comes in four delicious flavors: Chicken Pot Py, Beef Wellington, Chicken Fiesta, and Spaghetti & Meatballs. www.doctorsfinest.com

· A Good Night’s Sleep – With a country in crisis, it’s important to a good night’s sleep. This helps us, both humans and pets, be the best version of ourselves: productive, friendly, and happy. This is only possible with a comfortable bed, such as those made by Urban Bone Dog Beds, which produces handmade canine and kitty beds that are comfortable, decorative, and durable. www.urbanbone.com

· Stay Healthy – Our health, and that of our pets, is of utmost importance, and an important aspect of any health regimen is proper nutrition. Recommended by top pet nutritionists, Vetraceuticals is an easy-to-use supplement that helps pet immune systems, ensuring a long healthy life. www.vetranutrition.com

· Support the Arts – A vibrant culture of arts is essential to a successful civilization and, under a Yoyo pet-ministration, all pooches will be encouraged to express themselves. American Artist Aimée Hoover will help. Her one-of-a-kind, custom pet portraits already hang in the homes of animal lovers across the country and now, she will be painting our Nation’s First Dog hopeful. Her work has been featured in numerous publications including Bark Magazine, Modern Dog, and Australia’s Urban Animal, in which she was recognized internationally as one of ten pet portrait artists from around the world. www.aimeehoover.com

· Support Your Party – Seeing the light side of any situation is an important aspect of being a pet, especially a presidential hopeful, and Yoyo finds all her fun accessories at Charming Pet Products. Whenever she has to address her public, Yoyo sports the company’s famous Original Party Collar in a red, white and blue patriotic design for all-American canines! This Party-Collar consists of fancy chiffon ribbons finished with stars connected on a covered elastic band that fits around a patriotic pooches’ neck. Yoyo says Charming’s Patriotic Party Collar is the perfect accessory for the new First Dog in the White House! Woof! www.charmingpetproducts.com

· Dress Fabulous, Be Fabulous – A lover of stylish clothes and dramatic fashion statements, Yoyo knows pets must look good to succeed. She finds her pet fashion at Total Diva Pets, whose fashionable wigs for fashionable dogs were a giant hit on the runways of Pet Fashion Week in New York and Tokyo. Dogs everywhere will want to look just like Yoyo by wearing the Afro style. www.totaldivapets.com

· Be Prepared – Following the Boy Scouts’ solemn creed, Yoyo keeps herself safe by bucking up while in the car with her own seat belt from www.handicappedpets.com. She does this not only to protect herself, but also for the driver and passengers in the vehicle. Unrestrained pets can cause serious harm to your beloved four-legged family member or to other passengers if the pets are launched during a crash.

Think not what your dog can do for you, think what you can do for your dog!

It’s official! Yoyo has announced her candidacy for White House Pet!

Saturday, December 6th, 2008

And she did it in style with a press conference at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel with media crews there covering this historic occasion! In the coming months, watch for Yoyo’s Pup Rallies and other events to raise money for her favorite charity, American Humane. Meantime, check out her first fundraiser, doggie tees that say White House Pawtential by clicking on the shopping page of www.alphadogpr.com. You can also see a list of her sponsors in this month’s Trendsetter. Yoyo welcomes any of your clever ideas for her campaign….Woof!

OFFICIAL BALLOT

Welcome to the first annual Alpha Dog Public Relation’s Top 10 Best & Worst Dressed Dogs in America! With this ballot, you can help decide which dogs were the best dressed of all the pooches across the nation in 2008, while also identifying those pups that simply were fashion disasters!

In selecting a dog’s Fashion Rating, please consider style, originality of dress, and the practical nature of the clothes worn, as well as – just like any beauty contest – the pooch’s character and community service. American Humane dictates that canine clothes should be appropriate for the situation and not restrict the animal’s movement. The guidelines from the organization that ensures “no animals were harmed” on television and movie sets also states that costuming and/or props must not restrict the animal’s breathing or cause overheating with consideration given on how easily it can be removed in case of an emergency. Colors, dyes, makeup or adhesives used on animals should also be toxin free.

With that in mind, reflect on this year’s entries and judge from 1 to 10, with a “1” being best dressed of 2008 and a (more…)

Cougars and MILFs – Part 1 (of 2)

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

From “The Problem with Women is Men,” Posted on Oct. 14th, 2008.

Cougar. MILF. Two words that keep making their rounds in various subcultures. For those in the un-know, let’s define these terms—err… at least, offer the media-infused definitions:

Cougar: A woman over 40 who pursues, dates and “plays” with younger men… sometimes significantly younger

MILF: A simple acronym… Mom I’d Like to F*ck.

Driven by the media, these terms are creeping into everyday vocabulary and life: from Barbara Walters’ interview with the women of The View to the multitude of websites dedicated to “assisting young men” find, attract, and date said Cougars and MILFS: dateacougar.info, milf-date.com, and milfdatelink.com are just the tip of the iceburg… but Sherry M. is all in favor of it.

“I’m [over 50] and have been dating men 10-20 years younger since I was divorced at the age of 38. Being single and ‘looking’ for the past year (I had been with a 38 year old for the past six years), I just recently registered on an online cougars dating site. I hadn’t thought about being a ‘Cougar’, but in trying to better ‘target my market’ (I am a marketing consultant), I realized I needed to find a site that specialized in older women looking for younger men. I have to say, I was amazed that most of the men on the site seem to be looking for women 30 years older, and I had hoped to meet someone at least older than my youngest child… and most are not looking for stable relationships. I find the men meet who are my age are often “done” with life… no more questions, more passion… and if they are still alive, they wouldn’t consider dating someone as old as me! They’re looking for much younger women.”

Edgy? Sure. Are the terms cute? Perhaps, but it depends on who’s saying it and how it’s said. These labels have been assigned to women for their actions, behavior, attractiveness, body type, or lifestyle. And as with any label, each comes with its own perception. I went in search of a reality-check on these terms, and spoke with women from all walks of life. I was greeted with a multitude of responses, ranging from “Hell yeah! I’m a Cougar, and DAMN proud of it!” to “WTF is this about? Why am I a cat because I’m dating a younger guy?”

Case-in-point: “Pamela from Maryland”—a “seasoned and spicy 50 year-old”— loves the term: “Well, the Cougar label is better than a ‘hag’ label! The image of a cougar is strong, sleek, confident, playful, fierce, protective —and very capable of taking care one’s self.”

But where did the terms originate? Reports and opinions vary, but Pamela has a theory that is more probable than not: “I believe that the label ‘Cougar’ was coined by a really pissed off ‘twenty-something’ [woman] who saw her [male] prey enticed and conquered by a more experienced woman with more to offer than sex. Let’s be honest—a label is a label; street vendors sell knock-offs [of designer labels] constantly. A true Cougar laughs off the disparaging comments, and anyone entertaining the thought of getting involved with a Cougar must realize that 1) we don’t need anyone to feel or be complete; 2) our time is important to us and we’ll invest it where we’ll get the most return; and 3) will everyone please just lighten up? And by the way….who’s to say MILF doesn’t mean MEN I’d Like to F*ck?”

Although similar and cut from the same cloth, Cougars and MILFs are different, and after speaking with over 100 women about the positives and negatives of the label and personal/societal perceptions, I was faced with very different comments and opinions. We’ll tackle MILFs tomorrow… for now, let’s look at the cats.

COUGARS

The word itself denotes a cat with a hunter’s instincts and actions… a predator, if you will. And that caused a stir with Donna Moore (singer, actress, and writer/producer of the theatre production: COUGAR! A New Musical—which is currently running off-Broadway, check out www.donnamoorediva.com): “I think there’s a double standard. Now that women are dating younger men, society wants to vilify and predatorialize women calling them a Cougar. A number of people have asked me what you call an older man who is linked with a younger woman and I’ve researched it… it’s called a man.”

True, Donna… other men call him “lucky”.

So, is a Cougar a 40 year-old+ body-image-focused, younger man-dater? Maybe, but there’s much more to it than that. “[Society] also sees Jennifer Anniston and Demi Moore [as Cougars],” said Pamela from Maryland. “I think women in their 40’s are just ‘coming into their own’, and realizing their ability to take control of their lives and how much fun life can. It’s all about attitude.”

And that attitude can carry over to all parts of life. With that said, is being a Cougar about dating and sexuality? Or is it finance and security? Or maybe it’s body youthfulness? A partying lifestyle? Maybe, and I heard from women in all these siloed walks of life… but being a Cougar is about he combination of these traits, despite what the media might “define” as a Cougar:

“The ‘notion’ of being a Cougar is based on what the media projects…” continues Pamela, “which is dating and sexuality first and foremost —hey, it gets the ratings. But if you actually looked at a woman who perceives herself as a Cougar, you find a very confident, no bullsh*t woman who has seen it all—been there, done that, bought the T-shirt, and is not threatened by a younger woman. In business, it’s every woman (and man) for herself (or himself)—the bedroom rarely plays into the boardroom anymore. [Cougars] prove our existence every day, and can relax at the end of the day with a chilled Grey Goose and a smile.”

And Kristen S. agrees: “Cougars defy the societal stereotype of age—or more accurately, they ignore it. It’s definitely about sexuality though, which comes from a confidence and wisdom a woman gains from life experience. Sexuality, especially for women, is so psychological—I view cougars as women who know who they are and have gained wisdom from life experience—and that is sexy.”

“The term Cougar is used when discussing dating and sexuality,” said Susan Hartzler, president of AlphaDogPR. “But a Cougar is someone who has it all together to be attractive to any man, be it young or old. She is financially secure, has a youthful spirit and joie de vivre that cannot be bought, or found in someone in their 20s. You have to have lived life to know about how to live YOUR life. I would much rather be labeled a Cougar than an old broad or worse—a spinster. There are words that are much worse than Cougar that the media could have come up with to use. I think Cougar works. I’m proud of my age. I’m proud of my Cougar status. I still turn heads. I still get whistled at. Until that changes, I’m still purring up a storm!”

“The cougar upsets the status quo in many respects, said Karin Anderson, Ph.D. at Concordia University. “In our culture (with the strong possibility of evolutionary factors playing a part here as well), women are valued for their physiques, while men are valued for their power/influence. Therefore, young women rule and older men rule. The cougar intimidates young women in that she looks much like they do yet has what they don’t—confidence, financial means, security, command of her sexuality, and a strong sense of self. Therefore, it is likely, that young women are the most threatened by the cougar. In fact, I was first introduced to the concept when a friend in her mid-twenties called me a cougar. She was joking, of course, but clearly the term appeared in her vernacular long before mine.”

I spoke with a number of self-identifying Cougars that were clear that they were after younger guys purely for fun. But I also spent time with Debbie Nigro, who summed things up beautifully: “When women are in their 20s, they are looking to procreate with… when they are in their 40’s, they are looking for someone to recreate with.”

And as the Co-founder and Chief Executive Girlfriend (self-titled) at FirstWivesWorld.com, Debbie would know. Her site focuses on assisting women put a new face on divorce, thus creating another “happily ever after” for themselves. She and I spent a lot of time talking, and separating the media hype from the reality of Cougars:

Charles Orlando: Do you like the term “Cougar”? It is accurate?

Debbie Nigro: The media and society defines a Cougar as a woman who dates or carouses around with a younger man. But it sounds predatory, and it’s not completely accurate. I want a new word. I actually ran a contest to find a new word on FirstWivesWorld.com. Maybe “Cougaress” is a more accurate term.

C.O.: Cougars: Are they looking for a mate, or looking for a date?

D. N.: It varies. The bulk of women who are back in the dating game are older, but the dating pool is more “shallower”… mostly because men dripping with testosterone need to validate their masculinity with a younger woman.
C.O.: How do you think this metamorphosis takes place—from woman to Cougar?

D. N.: When a woman is younger, she is insecure. As she ages, she finds her femininity—her sexuality. Cougars are confident and secure… and choose to enjoy the company of a younger man. But the stereotypes are completely inaccurate. SNL did a skit: Cameron Diaz in tight stuff, but it ended up really raunchy, depicting Cougars as “old comfortable shoes… billy goats that fight each other for prey.” Cougars are not predators trolling for younger men. We’re confident, not desperate.

C.O.: Why are Cougars getting into the mainstream now? What’s special about this time?

D. N.: There are many variables that have caused this change: The increasing earning power of women, opening new businesses, choosing divorce. And, women now have ‘permission’ by society to be dating a younger man. It’s more accepted.

C.O.: “Cougars are over 40 years old.” Agree or disagree?

D. N.: Disagree. Cougars can be any age, shape, or size… and don’t have to look like Cameron Diaz. Besides… it can be nice to have a younger man… even amusing. Some of the younger guys love it. No strings. No drama.

C.O.: What about relationships? Commitment? Marriage?

D. N.: Cougars aren’t like a younger woman who want to get married. That’s all a game. Cougars are much more confident. For women, it’s nice to just be carefree… no worries… just fun.

Cougars… your power has been explored. Thursday… the MILF.

Okay, so I haven’t even sent out the current Holiday Trendsetter release yet but I already got a major media placement for one of my clients. Victory Wines is going to be featured in “The Scoop” section of the next issue of ANIMAL WELLNESS which hits mid January! In case you don’t know about Vicktory Wines, when Michael Vick’s house was raided last year, there were 48 dogs rescued. 22 of them are currently being rehabilitated by Best Friends Animal Society in Kanab, Utah. Dog Lovers Wine Club is supporting that effort by announcing the release of the Vicktory Dog Wine Collection of labels commemorating these dogs and bringing continuing awareness to the anti-dog fighting cause.

DOGS GO GREEN – AMERICANS WANT SAFE AND ECO-FRIENDLY PRODUCTS FOR THEIR PETS, TOO
There’s an abundance of ways to protect our dogs and the earth

Los Angeles, CA – Why worry about contaminants and hormones in pig ears and synthetic plush toys when there are veggie hides to chew on and dog toys made with non-toxic natural fibers and recycled materials? And while you’re at it, share the good, green life with less fortunate pooches. We at Alpha Dog PR researched some of the latest trends and here’s the scoop:

  • Walk for the UnderdogThe 4th Annual Walk for the Underdog is the biggest dog pack party on the planet and benefits 30 rescue organizations. NECESSITY IS THE MOTHER OF INVENTION ESPECIALLY IN THE DOG WORLD
Dog owners create innovative products for their four legged loved ones

Los Angeles, CA – Americans love their pets. That’s a fact which is evidenced by the $41 billion spent in 2006 on pet goods and services, according to Businessweek. The totals for 2007 are expected to be even higher. Even with all these good and services available in today’s marketplace, many pet owners found it necessary to create something new to fulfill a particular need for their beloved pet. These innovative and creative products aimed at helping our four legged loved ones are available for other pet owners who might find themselves in same dilemma. Here are a few popular ones:

  • Eddie’s Wheels offers front, rear and quad carts for mobility challenged dogs (and cats!). The business was started when Eddie and Leslie Grinnell’s dog, Buddha, became suddenly paralyzed in the rear due to disc disease. Eddie, an engineer by trade, built her a dogcart to help her get around while she healed. Ten years later, a business was born and the product line has grown to meet the demand for devices to help animals with all kinds of mobility challenges, including front wheel carts for dogs who are borne with congenital defects, front leg amputees and victims of abuse and trauma. By giving these dogs their independence and mobility, they are given a new “leash” on life. www.eddieswheels.com • 888-211-2700

The 2008 Tail Wagon™ is an alternative and safe mode of transportation ideal for: families who bring their animal companions along for the adventure, maturing pets that are unable to run as far as they once did, the urban bicycle commuter who needs a safe mode of transportation for their furry friends, pet parents who are looking for a high performance sporty stroller, smaller pets that can’t keep up with their long legged friends, cross country ski adventures that go further than four legs can run. www.burley.com • 800-423-8445
  • From Happytails Canine Spa Line comes a remedy for your dog’s inappropriate gaseous emissions (IGE). Dog Smog Remedy contains peppermint and fennel to slay the fire breathing beast but it’s more than just a breath freshener. Dog Smog Remedy gets to the guts of the problem with herbal extracts of dill, parsley ginger and bromelain. All of these ingredients help calm the bubbling brute below and provide a long-term solution to an embarrassing problem. Whether you use a quick spritz to freshen breath or add a drop or two to food, Dog Smog Remedy is a powerful weapon in the war on pollution.(May also be used on husbands) www.happytailsspa.com • 866-HAPPY-20
  • The Honest Kitchen was founded as a labor of love out of the owner’s personal search for a more economical and convenient way to feed a natural, healthy raw diet to her dog Mosi, a Rhodesian Ridgeback with charisma, charm and a discerning palate. The Honest Kitchen’s new & innovative approach to canine nutrition offers owners piece of mind with natural, delicious, dehydrated raw dog food.
